International Day of Sport for Development and Peace: Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers

 Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers

Greetings everyone, my name is Sofonie Dala.

On 6 April, we celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, a global moment that recognizes the power of sport to drive positive social change.

The 2026 theme, “Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers,” highlights sport’s unique ability to foster connection, inclusion, and peace in an increasingly divided world. As a universal language, sport brings people together across cultures, generations, and communities—creating opportunities for dialogue, solidarity, and mutual respect.

This day also reinforces the contribution of sport to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 3, Sustainable Development Goal 5, and Sustainable Development Goal 10, by promoting healthier lifestyles, empowering women and girls, and building inclusive societies.

Today, we are joined by Marcia, a 15-year-old football player, to share her experience:

Sofonie: Marcia, do you play well at your school?
Marcia: Yes, more or less.

Sofonie: How many goals have you scored since you started playing?
Marcia: I have scored 4 goals.

Sofonie: That’s great! What is your role on the field?
Marcia: I like to play and dribble past opponents, but my main role is defense.

Sofonie: So your teammates trust you?
Marcia: Yes, they trust me.

Sofonie: When did you start playing?
Marcia: One year ago.

Sofonie: Do you enjoy being on the field?
Marcia: Yes, I really enjoy it.

Sofonie: Are you a good player?
Marcia: Yes, I am a good player.

Sofonie: Thank you, Marcia.

Marcia’s story reflects how sport empowers young people, builds confidence, and creates opportunities—truly building bridges and breaking barriers in our communities.
